How to Make Perfect Sweet Potato Fries in the Air Fryer

A Crispy Little Comfort for Sharing
Serves ~4 | Plant-Based | Cozy, Crisp & Herb-Seasoned
Whisking a little wunder into every dish… especially the ones you eat with your fingers.
Back when I moved into my first real apartment—the kind with creaky floors and mismatched dishes—I fell in love with sweet potatoes. Not in a trendy, spiralize-them kind of way. Just… roasted, warm, and covered in a ridiculous amount of paprika. It was one of the first foods I learned to actually cook—no microwave, no frozen tray—just a cutting board, a hot oven, and whatever spices I had in the back of the cupboard.
Years later, I swapped the oven for an air fryer, and wow—these crispy-on-the-outside, tender-on-the-inside sweet potato fries became something even better. They’re fast, fuss-free, and perfect for dipping into anything you love (or just eating straight off the tray with slightly burnt fingers).
We’re not necessarily living on a student budget anymore, but let’s be honest—a humble, nourishing snack you can make with pantry staples and one vegetable is still a little victory. These fries are budget-friendly, energy-efficient, and taste like something you’d order at a cozy little café.

💛 A Note on the Good Stuff
Sweet potatoes aren’t just comforting—they’re kind of amazing. Rich in fiber, vitamin A (hello, glowing skin), and slow-digesting carbs, they help keep your blood sugar steady and your belly full. Combine that with heart-healthy olive oil and a handful of herbs, and this is the kind of snack that actually gives back while it satisfies.
And since they’re air fried, not deep-fried, you’re getting all the crisp without the heaviness.
💜 The Magic is in the Toss

❓ FAQ – Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries Edition
Why are my sweet potato fries not crispy in the air fryer?
The biggest culprit is overcrowding! Make sure your fries are spread out in a single layer and not piled up—air needs to circulate to crisp them properly. Also, don’t skip the cornstarch step—it really helps with texture.
Do I need to soak sweet potatoes before air frying?
Nope! Unlike regular fries, sweet potatoes are lower in starch and don’t benefit much from soaking. Just toss them in cornstarch and seasoning, and you’re good to go.
Can I use frozen sweet potato fries?
Yes! Frozen sweet potato fries can be cooked straight from the freezer—just adjust the cook time and keep an eye on them so they don’t burn. They may not be quite as crispy as homemade, but they’ll still be tasty.
Can I reheat sweet potato fries in the air fryer?
Absolutely! Reheat them at 350°F (175°C) for 3–5 minutes. They’ll crisp up again without getting soggy like they might in the microwave.
🍠 The Cornstarch Trick (Why It Works!)
If you’ve ever made sweet potato fries that turned out floppy or soft, don’t worry—you’re not alone. Sweet potatoes have more moisture and less starch than regular potatoes, which means they need a little help to get crispy.
Enter: cornstarch. Just a light dusting before air frying helps absorb excess moisture and creates a delicate outer coating that crisps up beautifully in the hot air. It’s a tiny step with a big payoff, and once you try it, you’ll never skip it again.
🧂 Our Favorite Seasoning Combos
We love a classic salt-and-pepper fry, but sweet potatoes can handle so much more flavor! Here are some of our go-to seasoning blends:
- Smoky Paprika + Garlic Powder – A cozy, bold favorite
- Cinnamon + Chili Powder – Sweet meets spicy for the adventurous snacker
- Za’atar + Sea Salt – An herby, earthy twist
- Everything Bagel Seasoning – Yes, really. Trust us.
- Brown Sugar + Cayenne – Like a hot honey drizzle in fry form
Mix it up and try different blends depending on your mood or your meal!

🌿 Just a Little Wunder…
Sometimes it’s not about reinventing the wheel. It’s about cutting a sweet potato into fries and letting the air fryer do the rest. These little strips of joy are easy, affordable, and endlessly adaptable—change the spices, switch up the dip, or just enjoy them as they are.
I know these seem so simple, but these little guys hold such a special place in my heart. They were my go to to make in every season. I absolutely loved that I could make something that felt so gourmet at home– to be fair I was a teenager so most things that were sold at a restaurant was gourmet. These are a good reminder that sometimes you just need to let it be easy when it comes to “fancy” eats.
Let us know if you get a chance to try them out!
Much love,
